Experts Say Synthetic Peptides Are Popular for Recovery and Sleep, But Evidence Is Thin

Experts interviewed for a feature published by Women's Health say synthetic injectable peptides marketed for fitness, recovery and sleep are not supported by solid research, with the exception of GLP-1 drugs. The report quotes researchers and clinicians who say the category has grown far faster than the evidence behind it.

Peptides are "short chains of proteins" naturally made by the body, according to Katrin Svensson, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University who studies them. She says the gut releases hormones including glucagon-like peptide 1 after eating to signal fullness to the brain, and that peptides made in the body are not the same as injectable synthetic versions, which the article notes are not yet FDA-approved.

What people are using

Synthetic peptides used for weight loss include tirzepatide and semaglutide, both GLP-1s, along with retatrutide, says Elena Christofides, MD, a double-board certified endocrinology and internal medicine physician in Columbus, Ohio. The report cites a 2024 review in Cureus linking GLP-1s to benefits for cardiovascular and renal health, obstructive sleep apnea, and neurodegenerative diseases.

For fitness, Christofides says people use compounds ending in "morelin," such as sermorelin, tesamorelin and ipamorelin, which the article says trigger growth hormone release. A 2026 review in a Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons publication is cited as associating them with fracture healing and joint preservation.

What the science shows

BPC-157 is being taken for recovery, and the report describes a small 2021 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine in which 11 of 12 patients given a BPC-157 shot for knee pain had significant improvement, and three of four given BPC-157 plus TB4 did. The article says that study was small and poorly constructed, with unclear timing and frequency of dosing.

Sleep peptides such as pinealon have only "small science" behind them, meaning scattered small trials and animal testing, Christofides says. "The evidence is very low and there's nothing that is supporting that they're actually doing anything," says Svensson.

Safety and regulation

Christofides says synthetic peptides sit "legally in a gray zone," and that compounded versions sold by online sellers, some in China, are not something she can recommend in good faith. The report notes the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee recently voted to recommend BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTS-c, Epitalon and Semax be added to a list pharmacies may compound.

What it means

Oncologist Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania is quoted calling the trend "totally insane" and saying people do not have to spend $500 every few weeks on peptide infusions to be healthy. The experts quoted say anyone interested should talk with a healthcare provider first, and that the evidence outside GLP-1s remains unsettled.
